Montbeliarde

The Montbeliarde breed comes from the Bos Taurus Frontosus and is part of the "red-white" group of breeds of the Simmental and Fleckvieh family being a member of the World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) and the European Simmental Federation.

The history of the race is linked to the beginning of the 18th century, namely when many farmers in the current territory of Switzerland settled in France in the French region Comté bringing with them the cows they owned. Following a methodological selection process, specimens from this cow population began to participate in various exhibitions under the name Montbeliarde (after the name of the most important city of the Doubts department in the French region Comté).

Montbeliarde is a mixed breed, considered to be the most advanced breed for milk production within the Simmental family.
The Monbeliard cow produces a milk rich in casein B, which contributes to its efficiency and to the cheese production and is in the top of protected cheese (Comte Reblochon, Mont'Dor etc.). Also, the breed comes to the foreground due to the production qualities and functional characters:

Mastitis resistance index;

Fertility (high percentage of gestation) 10% above the conception rate of the Holstein breed at first insemination;

longevity;

Ease of calving;

Good growth rate of young bulls intended for fattening

All of these qualities make Montbeliard an efficient and easy to grow breed. It responds well to the growth in the mountain area (grazing in summer, hay in winter). At the same time, the breed is characterized by near-perfect, well-extended (anterior and posterior) with high and wide grip udder; the suspensory ligament of the udder is well-marked, with the floor of the udder above the hock and the the teats, average-sized, are located in the middle of the quarter and slightly outward.

They grow well in farms with a free-stall system, with collective stalls with permanent straw bedding and an open wall. The qualities of the animals presented is a guarantee that this breed will grow and be efficient in Romania and that it will be the basis enhancing the Romanian Bălțata breed through infusion crossings.

The charolaise breed is a meat breed, the best-known and the most widespread in France and Europe. To get more details on breeding races in general and on the charolaise breed, in particular, go to the appropriate link.

The main advantage of the Charolais breed consists in its great genetic variability, which has many qualities. Thanks to this genetic variability, any breeder can choose the type of animal he wants to raise depending on the type of production they are considering, depending on:

The Charolais breeds are known for the best use of feed, especially rough fodder. In fact, their intake capacity, superior to that of other breeds, and their high metabolism allows for a good use of coarse fodder (straw, forage, hay), which are the most economical.

Being of an unequalled docility, the work of the breeder is easy and the handling safe.

Calving is easy in a proportion of 91%. In recent years, the percentage has considerably improved through intensive selection and, in particular, by the rational use of different animal types. Due to the good maternal qualities of the breed (the maternal instinct, the value of the milk), the calves grow easily, heavy and with good conformation.

The Charolais breed is especially used in the absorption or industrial crossbreeding because it transmits the qualities of the offspring: more than 10% increase of the products, reduced energy needs, quality meat etc. This phenomenon is called heterosis.

Finally, charolais meat has world-class organoleptic qualities, is dietary, has no excess fat (only 10% compared to 15-30% in other bovine breeds). It has the most famous and most appreciated meat in France.

Charolais

Limousin

Angus

The Limousin breed originates in France and has been formed over centuries in the central and western central area around Limoges, in the Limousin region.

Being a breed of rustic meat, calving is easy with less than 6% possible problems. Calves are not big at birth. Cows usually calve by themselves in nature and care very well for the calves. The 16-month yearlings give carcasses of 380 kg, the carcass meat performance is 75% being well-dressed in muscle.

The breed is large with a withers height of 1.35-1.5 m, short head, deep chest, fine skeleton, weight of cows between 650 and  950 kg and of bulls of 1.100-1.350 kg, strong limbs, forward directed horns, the coat colour being acajou (mahogany), an open ring around the nose, these cows are longevous (average 9-10 years). The breed's herd-book dates back to 1886.

At present, the Limousin breed is spread across all continents in 64 countries (perhaps Romania will be the 65th). It is grown in pure breed or different hybrids are practiced.

The French livestock has 1.5 million head of this breed, of which 800,000 cows, out of which over 100,000 are under control.

Aberdeen Angus is a very old breed, originally from Aberdeen County, located in northeastern Scotland. In the beginning, the breed had their coat in several colors, but during the years it was subjected to black color selection. Recently red cattle have been accepted in the herd-books.

Horns are absent. They are animals of low height, but heavy weight. The head is small, short and wide and the limbs are short and muscular, with fine bone, long body, with large and deep thorax. The skin is soft and elastic.

The average cow size is between 1.10 and 1.25 m and the bulls are about 1.35 m in size. The average weight of cows is 550 to 650 kg and of bulls 900 to 1,000 kg.

Quality of carcass and meat

Angus meat, in the top of consumer choices, is high-quality marbled and percelled (intramuscular distribution of fat) beef. The slaughtering yield is over 60%, and for the very well-grown yearling between 67 and 72%, with the meat-bone ratio higher than 5:1. Angus displays the qualities of the upper carcass, with a high percentage of lean meat, fat and bones. Well-developed hindquarters produce very good quality meat - marbled, moderately coated with fat, which gives the meat savoury and juiciness when cooked. The fine tissues obtained from the muscular marbling ensure succulence and aroma when cooked. It is these features that make Angus meat the first choice of restaurant and gastronomy chefs around the world.

 Effectiveness

The Angus breed has the finishing power only through pasture grazing without requiring concentrated fodder, producing more meat from the pasture than any other conventional breed. This breed produces less damage to the pasture than any other breed.

Exterior aspect

The Angus breed has a proportionately developed conformation for each age level with a balanced weight distribution on all four legs with appropriate lengths, widths and depths;

Horns are totally missing - a characteristic of the breed;

The head is small, expressive, without horns, and the neck is short and deep;

The overall exterior aspect is specific to the morphological type of meat, harmonious, with attributes for the impressive meat production;

Fine-robust constitution;

The upper trunk line is straight and horizontal;

Large and protruding chest, deep thorax, square crotch and convex buttock, very lowered;

Large and cylindrical long, very wide and deep trunk;

Reduced extremities with fine bone and broad aplomb, with short, solid limbs;

Adult bulls have a weight of between 1000 and 1300 kg;

Adult cows weigh 550-700 kg;

It has the best balance.

Undoubtedly the Angus breed has the best characters. With easy calving, early maturity, high fertility, quiet temperament, optimal and efficient growth rate, quality carcass production, and rapid sexual maturation (precocity), no wonder the Angus breed is the most famous breed sought for both genetics and commercial herds.
